New On Blu: Juan of the Dead

New this week from Entertainment One is a Blu-ray edition of Juan of the Dead, directed by Alejandro Brugues, and starring Alexis Diaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina, Andros Perrugoria, Andrea Duro, and Blanca Rosa Blanca.

"It's equal parts splatter and laughter in this doomsday romp with a decidedly Cuban touch. When Havana begins to fill up with bloodthirsty zombies, Juan, a forty-year-old slacker, is left with no choice but to become a hero, save his country and protect his family on an island that has turned into a real bloodbath."

An eerie silence hangs over Havana's main sea-front avenue as smoke drifts out of a lone abandoned car.

Suddenly, dozens of bloodied figures lurch into view, some with empty eye sockets, others dragging limbs behind them.

It's another day on location for "Juan of the Dead," Cuba's first zombie movie, a mix of camp gore and wry satire.

In this version, the communist government blames the zombie invasion on U.S.-backed dissidents intent on destabilizing the country.
